The project of the papyri of Leipzig
The Leipzig University Library papyrus collection comprises approximately 5500 objects. Its foundation dates back to 1902 and the activities of the German Papyrus Cartel. Approximately 4000 items in the collection are made of papyrus, with a few items made of parchment, paper and linen. In addition, the collection includes 1500 ostraca, mostly written in Greek, with some pieces in Arabic, Coptic, Latin, Demotic and Hieratic. Especially noteworthy are the bilingual pieces, such as Greek-Latin papyri, Greek-Coptic parchments, and Greek-Demotic ostraca. The majority of the collection consists of documentary papyri reflecting everyday life in ancient Egypt, though the collection also includes nearly 100 literary papyri. The entire collection is accessible in the Papyrus Portal.
